The Hodgson family wishes to announce the peaceful passing of our mother, grandma, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend at the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at the age of 97 years.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents Wesley and Velma Hamilton, her husband R. Glen Hodgson (1996 – former M.P.P. Victoria-Haliburton 1963-1975), brother Gordon Hamilton, and sisters Trudi Wallace, Dorothy Hamilton, Margaret Frank.
Loving mother of Martin (Pat) Hodgson, Keith (Kim) Hodgson, Marianne (Dwain) Tighe, Lenard (Mona) Hodgson; grandmother of Leanne (Dave) Stodulka, Adam Hodgson, Curtis (Melissa) Tighe and great-grandmother to Clayton and Emily Tighe. Adored by Edward (Ted) Matthews, her partner of 15 years while living in Tillsonburg.
As the wife of a politician, Shirley knew how to “work a room” with her wit, sense of humour and likeable, friendly personality. From an early age, Shirley was motivated to write poems about what she learned in school, observed in nature or read in the newspaper. She said the poems just flowed from her pen once the idea came to her and so published a book of her poetry titled “Woven Words” to leave as her legacy.
While living in Haliburton with her husband Glen, Shirley belonged to Eastern Star, the curling club, and the Haliburton Highlands Hand Weavers and Spinners Guild. Shirley was a spinner and weaver – one of her best projects, a coverlet woven on a 100-inch loom, appears as the cover of her poetry book. She also loved to knit sweaters for Teddy Bears and gave away over 100 bears to family and new babies in her neighbourhood. Shirley moved from Haliburton to Tillsonburg in 2005 where she joined the Tillsonburg Weavers & Spinners Guild, continued to write poetry with a small group of poets, and enjoyed playing bridge at the Senior’s Centre.
The family wishes to express their deep gratitude and appreciation for the care and compassion shown to Shirley by Dr. Roth, Dr. Weiss, the TDMH staff in the ER, 2 North & 2 South and to the caring and dedicated staff of the Tillsonburg Retirement Residence as well as CarePartners.
