Joseph "Gary" Shearer

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Joseph Gary Shearer on August 1, 2025. He passed away at his favourite place, the cottage on Haliburton Lake — known simply as “Gary” to all who loved him

Born on November 27th, 1946, to the proud parents of Joseph & Shirley Shearer. Loving husband of 55 years to Patti, proud father to Brent and now reunited with their eldest son, Bradley.

Brother of Nancy (David Lovelle). Brother-in-law to Bill Lewis (Lucille, pre-deceased). Uncle to Shannon and Matt Lewis, Adie, Laurie and Holly Lovelle. Uncle Gary to many honorary Nieces and Nephews

Gary devoted his career to the manufacturing industry, where he served as a plant and area manager for American Can, Ball Packaging, and A.G. Simpson. He was admired for his leadership, integrity, and dedication, which impacted colleagues who respected him as a mentor and friend.

Gary also gave back to his communities in meaningful ways. He proudly served as President of the Lions Club in Kelowna, BC (1978–79), and later as President of the Haliburton Lake Cottagers Association, where he worked tirelessly to support the lake he loved so much. One of his greatest joys was coaching his son Brent’s hockey team, where his encouragement and leadership shaped not only the game but the young players themselves.

Those who knew Gary will remember his quiet strength, loyalty, and dedication to family. Whether at work, on vacation, or sitting on the dock, deck, or beach at Haliburton with the music on and the mountains blue, Gary carried himself with humility and heart — qualities that will continue to inspire all who loved him.

Visitation & Celebration of Life

Visitation will be held at MCEACHNIE FUNERAL HOME on Friday, September 5th, from 4 to 7 p.m., 28 Old Kingston Rd, Ajax, ON L1T 2Z7. All are invited to join the family for food and beverages to commemorate the life of Gary at Moxies, 1815 Liverpool Rd, Pickering, ON, L1V 1W2. As an expression of sympathy, donations to Haliburton Highlands Health Services Foundation, or any charity pertaining to cancer research, would be appreciated by the family.
