It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of John Allen Middleton, who left this world peacefully on January 8, 2025, at the age of 81 at his home on Little Kennisis Lake, Haliburton. Born in Toronto, John was the cherished son of the late Victor and Jean Middleton. From an early age, he was surrounded by the values that would define his life: an unwavering love for family, a genuine kindness for others, and a profound understanding of what it means to truly give of oneself.
John’s life was one of quiet strength and purposeful action with understated humour. His passions reached far beyond his professional life. Haliburton became the canvas for his love of the arts, where he cultivated a deep connection to pottery that spanned decades, creating beauty with his hands and sharing his creations with the community he adored. His love of orchids is evident in the numerous plants he continues to baby. Service to others was at the heart of who John was. Whether volunteering on the Fleming College board, supporting the Fleming School of the Arts, contributing to the Kennisis Lake Roads Committee, or lending his time and energy to service work in Guatemala, John’s life was a testament to the impact of selflessness and care.
Above all, John was a family man. His life’s legacy is one of love, kindness, and the deep connections he built with those around him. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Joan Middleton, whose partnership was a cornerstone of his life for 53 years. He will be forever loved and remembered by his daughter, Jean-Anne (Mike), and his treasured grandchildren Joseph and Riley. John was preceded in death by his beloved son Jeremy Middleton (2024) and grandfather to his girls Brianna Clark (Johnny Clark, great grandchild Jeremiah) and Meghan Chatterton. Cherished brother of Don (Maureen ), sister-in-law Catherine (John), and brother-in-law Bill (Debbie). He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, their children, and dear friends who were touched by his warmth and generosity.
John attended Leaside High School and Ryerson Polytechnical University before joining IBM where he devoted 30 years followed by 10 years at Airmiles. Embodying dedication and diligence and many long-term friends. His many interests included pottery, orchids, gardening, and great travel adventures with his friends and his dogs who are missing him terribly. John will be deeply missed, but his legacy of compassion, service, and unwavering love will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. He was a guiding light, and his memory will remain a beacon of inspiration for years to come.
